Talpiot Tomb Makes Another Round in the Blogosphere

Thanks go to Mark Goodacre of Duke University for this short post linking us to a recent paper about the alleged Jesus family tomb. As is typical, Mark clearly and succinctly summarizes the two primary points of weakness in the tomb argument — weaknesses that were noted at the beginning and which still kill the identification with Jesus of Nazareth. But perhaps $imcha Jacobovici can still squeeze more profit and notoriety out of it.

$imcha Jacobovici Defends Himself

Simcha Jacobovici has written a 46 page defense of his “nails of the cross” discovery. Sad to say, his delivery mechanism was James Tabor’s blog. No doubt it will be filled with backtracking, denial, and otherwise hair-splitting parsing of what he “meant.” The person with casual interest will probably not even bother wading through it, allowing Simcha to say, “Hey, I responded in detail,” to the masses whose eyes will glaze over thinking he’s done due diligence. Those people will also never find or read the critiques of his defense that will surely follow.

Simcha, we already know why you went public with this and what you meant. You are an attention-seeker who needs to cash in so you can keep your film career going. It isn’t rocket science. Why not just ask James Cameron for some cash — maybe you can catch him when he’s not out bonding with cannibals.

New Evidence for a 14th Century Shroud of Turin Date

Before you say, “well that’s obvious,” you should be aware that there is serious science behind the idea that the C-14 dating for the shroud is suspect due to contamination (see The DNA of God?: Newly Discovered Secrets of the Shroud of Turin; the author is a scientist who pioneered new techniques for detecting an organic bacterial coating that forms over time on ancient textiles — which would contaminate C-14 tests).

Here’s the new evidence. An art historian (Luciano Buso) claims to have found tell-tale signature clues that point to the Italian master Giotto as the creator of the image on the shroud. Giotto’s lifetime occurs well within the period in which the current C-14 dating places the shroud.

This time archaeologist Joe Zias puts it to Jacobovici regarding his “discovery” of the nails of Jesus’ cross in the Talpiot tomb. Hope this hurts $imcha’s bank account a bit.

More Jesus Tomb Nonsense — Just in Time for Easter

Simcha Jacobovici, the man who brought us the feast of non-sequiturs known as the Jesus Tomb, has a new “discovery” for us, just in time for Easter. That’s so weird! Jacobovic now claims he has found — get this — two nails from Jesus’ cross in the tomb. The holy grail can’t be far behind (just a little more digging . . . I think I can, I think I can). And when you find the crystal skull after that, there’s only one more prize to go — the real pay day — the alien body.

Simcha, you’re a man born out of time. Or maybe you’re a time traveler from the Middle Ages, when bogus relic hunting and gathering were where the action was for manipulating the minds of the masses. And now you’ve also found a way to monetize it. Sweet.

I have to wonder how long James Tabor is going to allow his name to be associated with this P.T. Barnum for our time.
