Cuneiform Lexical Lists
Believe it or not, Akkadian scribes left behind bilingual dictionaries (Sumerian-Akkadian) that provided the key to later European scholars deciphering the meaning of many Sumerian words once Akkadian was cracked. These dictionaries are known as “lexical lists”. Today all major lexical texts have been published in the multi-volume set, Materials for the Sumerian Lexicon, begun by Benno Landsberger in the 1930s. We are fortunate at this time to have a whole website dedicated to them: the Digital Corpus of Cuneiform Lexical Texts. Here’s a link to a short article “What is a Lexical List?” found on that site.
