@blop2008: His post hits on the point and then misses it. The point is that the status quo of how people think about Bible software (i.e., WITHOUT syntax and NOT as a library) is obsolete. Why *shouldn't* we change the definition? We ought to for one simple reason: people (and especially scholars) use more tools than morphology. Since that is the case, THAT should be how we think of Bible software.

@mgvh: This ("a") makes more sense to me than what I heard at the shootout. I have since corresponded with the BW presenter, Glenn Weaver, who says I misunderstood his response. I've asked him to do a screen capture video of the search you describe so I can post it. Hopefully he'll do that. My version of BW is too old to matter for correcting that.

I'll be posting syntax examples tonight. On OpenText.org, it has weaknesses, as does any database. For example, one of the things that it doesn't do is account for verbless clauses. The guy who tagged much of OpenText, Randall Tan, has come out (with Andy Wu) with another syntax database (Cascadia) that has a similar look but different (and clearer terminology) than OpenText.org. We have Cascadia as well, and it is in 4.0. I haven't used it yet, so the examples I'll post tonight will only be OpenText.org and Andersen-Forbes for Hebrew.

Sorry... accidentally pushed submit.

Okay to finish my thought:

Syntax is very important, but to say that having a syntax database puts Logos at a whole different level above every other software that does not have this is like saying that the Mac OS Leopard made Window obsolete because it included Time Machine as a simple way to back-up your data. Sure back-up is great, but in the race to be the best OS its only one good step ahead, not a whole new level of OS technology.

Blessings,
Ahshuwah

Hi Dr. Heiser,
Sorry it took me a little while to get around to posting on your site. I do have a couple thoughts in regard to your blog post.

I think its great that Logos4 has a syntax database. As a long-time Accordance user I am thankful that they are working on multiple syntax databases which will be released with version 9. However, I do think you have exaggerated the benefits of a syntax database in the process of scholarly study. In my understanding, the study of syntax is one step in the process of exegesis (alongside textual criticism, etymology, morphology, historical context, biblical theology, and finally systematic theology), and for that reason a database can be very helpful for this one step, but to say that any software which does not have a syntax database is obsolete is saying too much.

In my opinion, a strong Bible software has tools for each of these steps, including search capabilities, the answers given by other scholars, and a user-friendly interface for recording your own conclusions. Syntax is very important, but to say A stonFor scholarly textual study, the mo
